Red Wings vs Avalanche?

In the 01-02 season, the Wings beat the Avs in the Western finals, but that series could have easily swung either way. The Wings had 17 more regular season points than the Avalanche, but Colorado also played without Peter Forsberg that whole time. My question is who was really the better team, without pointing to the obvious "Detroit won the series."
