Is dark brown sugar supposed to smell smokey?

I just bought some dark brown sugar at the grocery store (the stuff that's 100% cane sugar) and thought I smelled something funny on my hands during the car ride home. Once I got home and opened up the bag of brown sugar a huge whiff of smoke hit me, very similar to that of paprika. Is this normal or did I get a bad batch?
