If a parent offers up a child's life to absolve others of their sins, do they get hero worship or prison time?

If I understand correctly, God offers up JC's life as a sacrifice to absolve others of sin. He gets hero worship for that. But if a guy on earth sacrifices his child to absolve others, he gets prison time, right?
